June, 2007– Computer Safety - MySpace
In an effort to enhance the safety of your child, Campbell Union High School District wanted to be proactive in bringing to your attention a growing and possibly dangerous use of the Internet by teens and perhaps your child. We suspect that many of you may not be aware of this growing use of computers and the Internet in ways that can have serious consequences to your child.
This letter is to make you aware that Campbell Union High School District has some serious concerns over an Internet site known as www.MySpace.com. Evidently, a large number of students are using this and other sites to open accounts and post information of a personal nature and exchange highly personal information with others who may be students or may be predators posing as students. In reviewing these sites, it is also obvious that even though some account holders are minors and do not meet the “Terms of Service” criteria, they are able to use a fictitious birth date and still access the system.
MySpace.com has been made aware of various concerns about child safety issues that result from minors using their website. The purpose of this letter is to bring to your attention this current trend on the Internet so that you may protect yourself and your children from cyberstalking by adult Internet predators who visit the site to obtain personal information about teens and who often try to initiate in-person contact with teens who use the site.
Such sites have also become a frequent source of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying occurs when a teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, ridiculed or otherwise targeted by another teen using the Internet.
Our recommendation is that you monitor MySpace and other websites on a regular and ongoing basis for any activity in which your minor children may be involved. As a parent, we encourage you to be proactive in discussing with your child(ren) appropriate and inappropriate uses of the Internet, email, and such websites.
Please be sure that your child(ren) understand that if they torment, threaten, harass, humiliate, ridicule, or otherwise target or cyberbully another individual who they know through school, that the school can discipline (including suspend or expel) for inappropriate use of the Internet, email, or computers if such inappropriate use is related to school. We interpret the relationship to school to include messages sent from a home computer or other computer activity on the home computer if the messages are sent to or talk about another student, the school, or school staff or if the computer activity is otherwise related to school activity or attendance.
Please also be sure that your child understands that if your child is the target or victim of such school-related behavior, that the cyberbullying should be immediately reported to school administration for investigation and corrective action if verified. While the school cannot discuss with you the details of the corrective action taken against another student, we assure you that we will take what we believe will be effective action to stop the behavior from recurring. Of course, should any cyberbullying recur, please notify the school again so that further and more serious corrective action can be taken. The District is very concerned about such behavior and is determined to take effective action to stop the school-related behavior if it is brought to our attention.
For your information, the following is an excerpt from the MySpace.com in response to these concerns:
Our Terms of Service require that users must be sixteen years of age or older in order to apply. We have a very in-depth Terms of Service, which even applies to people who are not registered on the site. You can locate our Terms of Service here: http://myspace.com/misc/terms.html.
Our Terms of Service states that if a user under the age of 18 is found to be misrepresenting his or her age then he or she will be subject to the immediate loss of his or her account. We review every incoming correspondence and take action when necessary. We have worked with numerous parents and their children in regards to their MySpace.com accounts. We often work with law enforcement agencies to assist in the investigation of criminal activity and prosecution of criminals who violate the terms and conditions of our site or the safety of our users.
We suggest to concerned parents that if they do not wish for their child to have an account on MySpace.com, or have the exposure to other sites on the Internet, that they install monitoring software on their computer. Monitoring software, such as Spectorsoft @ spectorsoft.com, can also track their children’s online behavior, in the case that access to a particular website is granted. An excellent site for parents and teenagers regarding Internet use is www.safeteens.com. We highly recommend this site, which was provided by CyberTipLine (an online watchdog against child predators that MySpace.com works with).
We would advise these parents to work with their children in deleting their MySpace.com accounts, since they are not of the proper age to use our services.
MySpace.com considers the safety of every user a priority, regardless of age.
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

The safety of our children is our paramount concern. Please feel free to contact the Dean of Students at your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s use of MySpace.com or other internet sites. We are very happy to work with parents to help ensure the safety of all students.

In the latest round of school accountability, the Campbell Union High School District schools far surpassed federal and state expectations. In results reported this fall, all schools met every element of federal accountability, including participation rates, percent of students proficient in English language arts and math, graduation rates and the state's Academic Performance Index (API).
Del Mar High School, which had a state growth target of 7 points, turned in a standout performance with an actual growth of 39 points. Branham High School, which had a state growth target of 3 points, turned in an actual growth of 37 points. Leigh High School, which had a state target of 1 point, turned in an actual growth of 16.
The federal target for all schools was 22.3 percent proficiency in English Language Arts. CUHSD schools turned in results of 65%. The federal target for mathematics was 20.9%, with CUHSD achieving 62.7%. This is almost triple the federal target in both areas.
