Del Mar High School recently organized an August 26 retreat for the school’s first crop of International Baccalaureate (IB) candidates.
During the retreat, students learned about requirements for completing the IB diploma program as well as strategies to help them reach their academic goals.
“We’re trying to build them up as a community, so they can support each other as they go through the program.”
That was Jessical Olamit, Del Mar’s IB program coordinator.
One of the students attending the retreat was junior Imara Osorno.
She said one of her weaknesses as a student is time management, but the retreat had taught her some ways to overcome that.
“They talked about having study groups, so we can join up together and study different topics that we’re having trouble together, so it’s easier and more fun.”
The International Baccalaureate is a two-year program that provides high school students with the opportunity to earn college credits by passing a series of college-level courses recognized by universities worldwide.
Successful completion of the diploma program is regarded as a mark of academic distinction.
Another Del Mar junior, Eric Esparza, said the IB program seems like a lot of work, but he enrolled in it, because he wants to grow as a person.
“I really wanted to challenge myself to learn new experiences, learning how to make connections with the world, since it is an international program.”
Esparza believes the result will be worth it.
“It’s much more than just a diploma, because I feel that this is going to help us learn new things about life, and that’s going to go with us in college and after.”
